WHO WE HELP

LAW STUDENTS—TLAP works with 10 law schools in Texas to develop programming to raise awareness about alcohol and drug use, mental health issues, and wellness. Crisis counseling, referrals, and peer assistance are available.

YOUNG LAWYERS—The hard truth is that 32 percent of lawyers 30 years old or younger have a drinking problem. TLAP provides young lawyers with many resources, including links to videos on how to deal with stress and how to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

LAWYERS—TLAP helps lawyers find solutions for dealing with substance use and mental health issues and provides resources for incorporating a healthier lifestyle. TLAP maintains a database of professionals and support groups that are familiar with the challenges faced by lawyers experiencing these issues.

AGING LAWYERS—More attorneys are practicing law well past retirement age. TLAP helps aging lawyers deal with specific issues, including a loss of cognitive abilities. Often attorneys experiencing cognitive decline find themselves in the disciplinary system.

JUDGES—TLAP helps judges with issues related to substance use or mental health disorders and maintains a list of volunteer judges who are interested in providing support to peers in crisis.

LEGAL EMPLOYERS AND LEGAL PROFESSIONALS—Given the high prevalence of substance use and mental health issues among practicing lawyers, firms and other employers of attorneys will undoubtedly be faced with how to react when a situation involving these conditions arises. TLAP can help develop appropriate and compassionate strategies and provide in-house training.
